Not every worker is entitled to overtime
Follows the federal Fair Labor Standards Act: covered, non-exempt employees earn at least 1.5× their regular rate for hours worked beyond 40 in a workweek. There is no daily overtime requirement. Annualised at 52 weeks to estimate your tax bracket, so a single heavy week is taxed as if every week looked the same — real withholding on an unusually large paycheck is often higher, and evens out when you file.

Why self-employment tax feels so high
Does not include the qualified business income (QBI) deduction, the self-employed health insurance deduction, or state and local business taxes such as gross receipts or franchise tax. QBI in particular can reduce federal taxable income by up to 20% for many freelancers, so treat this as a conservative estimate. Paying 90% of your current-year liability or 100% of last year’s generally avoids an underpayment penalty.
Arizona Income Taxes
Does Arizona have a state income tax?
Arizona has a flat 2.5% individual income tax — the lowest flat rate among states that tax wage income.
Arizona uses the same standard deduction amounts as your federal return, so the deduction that lowers your federal tax lowers your Arizona tax too.
Arizona withholding works differently from most states: instead of tables, you choose a withholding percentage of your gross taxable wages on Form A-4, from 0.5% up to 3.5%. If you never filed an A-4, your employer applies the default rate.
Because the rate is flat and low, a bonus in Arizona is taxed at the same 2.5% as regular wages at the state level — the big withholding jump you see on a bonus is federal, not Arizona.
Arizona has no local or city income taxes.

Arizona Minimum Wage & Overtime

Overtime rules
Follows the federal Fair Labor Standards Act: covered, non-exempt employees earn at least 1.5× their regular rate for hours worked beyond 40 in a workweek. There is no daily overtime requirement.
Whether you are entitled to overtime at all depends on your job duties and how you are paid, not just your hours. Executive, administrative, professional, outside sales and certain computer roles can be exempt.
What this Arizona estimate does not include
Every paycheck calculator makes simplifying assumptions. Here are ours, so you know exactly where the estimate could differ from your real pay stub or tax return.
- State-level tax credits (child and dependent care, earned income, renter and property tax credits) are not applied.
- The estimate applies the 2.5% rate directly. Your actual paycheck withholding depends on the percentage you elected on Form A-4 and can be higher or lower.
- Assumes you live and work in this state for the whole year. Multi-state and remote-work situations follow different rules.
Common questions about Arizona taxes
How much tax is taken out of my paycheck in Arizona?
On a $65,000 salary, a single filer in Arizona keeps about $53,185 a year — roughly $4,432 a month. That is an effective tax rate of about 18.2%, made up of $5,620 federal income tax, $1,223 Arizona income tax, and $4,973 in Social Security and Medicare.
Does Arizona have a state income tax?
Yes. Arizona taxes wage income at 2.5% flat, meaning the same rate applies to every dollar of taxable income. There are no local income taxes in Arizona.
How much is $100,000 after taxes in Arizona?
A single filer earning $100,000 in Arizona takes home approximately $77,083 a year, or $6,424 a month, after an estimated $22,918 in federal tax, state tax, Social Security and Medicare. That is an effective tax rate of 22.9%. Filing jointly, itemizing or contributing to a 401(k) all change the figure.
How is overtime calculated in Arizona?
Follows the federal Fair Labor Standards Act: covered, non-exempt employees earn at least 1.5× their regular rate for hours worked beyond 40 in a workweek. There is no daily overtime requirement. Overtime pay is taxed as ordinary income — there is no separate overtime tax rate — but because a big overtime week raises your annualised pay, payroll systems often withhold more from that paycheck than your yearly rate implies. It evens out when you file.
How are bonuses taxed in Arizona?
Bonuses are supplemental wages. Most employers withhold a flat 22% for federal tax, plus Arizona tax at your regular withholding rate. Social Security and Medicare apply too. On a $10,000 bonus with a $100,000 salary, expect roughly $6,785 to land in your account. Withholding is not your final tax — if too much was withheld you get it back when you file.
How much should a 1099 worker save for taxes in Arizona?
On $70,000 of net self-employment profit, a single filer in Arizona owes roughly $16,741 in combined self-employment and income tax — about 23.9% of profit. Setting aside 26.9% of every payment is a safer rule of thumb, because it leaves room for a good year pushing you into a higher bracket. Estimated payments are due quarterly.
What is the minimum wage in Arizona?
Arizona's minimum wage is $14.70 per hour as of January 1, 2025. Arizona indexes its minimum wage to the cost of living every January 1. Flagstaff and Tucson set higher city minimums.

Federal income tax is estimated using the annual rate schedules and the standard deduction for your filing status. It assumes a Form W-4 filled out with no dependent credits, no other income and no extra deductions claimed in Steps 3 and 4.
Itemized deductions, the Child Tax Credit, education credits, the Earned Income Tax Credit, the qualified business income deduction and the Alternative Minimum Tax are not modeled.
Employer withholding and final tax liability are different numbers. What comes out of your paycheck is an advance payment; the return you file determines what you actually owe.
