Not every worker is entitled to overtime

The Fair Labor Standards Act requires overtime after 40 hours a week for covered, non-exempt employees. Salaried workers who meet the executive, administrative, professional, outside sales or computer employee tests are exempt, as are some agricultural and transportation roles. This calculator works out what overtime pay is worth — it does not determine whether you are legally entitled to it.

Follows the federal Fair Labor Standards Act: covered, non-exempt employees earn at least 1.5× their regular rate for hours worked beyond 40 in a workweek. There is no daily overtime requirement. Annualised at 52 weeks to estimate your tax bracket, so a single heavy week is taxed as if every week looked the same — real withholding on an unusually large paycheck is often higher, and evens out when you file.

Withholding is not your final tax

Your employer chooses which method to use, and neither one is your real tax on the bonus. If the flat 22% exceeds your actual marginal rate you get the difference back as a refund; if your marginal rate is higher, you will owe the rest when you file.

The percentage method applies a flat 22% federal rate to supplemental wages up to $1,000,000 a year, and 37% above that. The aggregate method adds the bonus to your regular wages and withholds on the combined total. Social Security and Medicare apply under both.

Why self-employment tax feels so high

An employee splits Social Security and Medicare with their employer. Self-employed people pay both halves — a combined 15.3% on 92.35% of net profit — on top of income tax. Half of it is deductible against your income tax, which softens the blow, and that deduction is already applied above.

Does not include the qualified business income (QBI) deduction, the self-employed health insurance deduction, or state and local business taxes such as gross receipts or franchise tax. QBI in particular can reduce federal taxable income by up to 20% for many freelancers, so treat this as a conservative estimate. Paying 90% of your current-year liability or 100% of last year’s generally avoids an underpayment penalty.

Delaware Income Taxes

Does Delaware have a state income tax?

Delaware exempts the first $2,000 of taxable income and then runs six brackets up to a top rate of 6.6%, which begins at $60,000 — a threshold most full-time salaries clear.

Delaware grants a personal credit rather than a personal exemption: a flat dollar amount subtracted from tax owed, worth more proportionally to lower earners.

Wilmington's 1.25% city wage tax applies to anyone working in the city, so a commuter into Wilmington pays it too.

Delaware has no sales tax at all, which partly offsets the income tax for residents who spend a lot locally.

Delaware does not tax Social Security benefits and grants a pension exclusion that is larger for filers aged 60 and over.

Traditional 401(k) contributions reduce Delaware taxable wages the same way they reduce federal taxable wages.

Overtime rules

Follows the federal Fair Labor Standards Act: covered, non-exempt employees earn at least 1.5× their regular rate for hours worked beyond 40 in a workweek. There is no daily overtime requirement.

Whether you are entitled to overtime at all depends on your job duties and how you are paid, not just your hours. Executive, administrative, professional, outside sales and certain computer roles can be exempt.

What this Delaware estimate does not include

Every paycheck calculator makes simplifying assumptions. Here are ours, so you know exactly where the estimate could differ from your real pay stub or tax return.

  • City, county and school district income taxes are not included in the estimate.
  • The Wilmington 1.25% wage tax is not included.
  • State-level tax credits (child and dependent care, earned income, renter and property tax credits) are not applied.
  • The Delaware Paid Leave employee share depends on how your employer splits the premium; the estimate assumes the maximum employee share.
  • Assumes you live and work in this state for the whole year. Multi-state and remote-work situations follow different rules.

Common questions about Delaware taxes

How much tax is taken out of my paycheck in Delaware?

On a $65,000 salary, a single filer in Delaware keeps about $51,405 a year — roughly $4,284 a month. That is an effective tax rate of about 20.9%, made up of $5,620 federal income tax, $2,795 Delaware income tax, and $4,973 in Social Security and Medicare.

Does Delaware have a state income tax?

Yes. Delaware taxes wage income at 0% – 6.6%, so higher slices of income are taxed at higher rates. Local income taxes also apply in parts of Delaware, on top of the state rate.

How much is $100,000 after taxes in Delaware?

A single filer earning $100,000 in Delaware takes home approximately $73,763 a year, or $6,147 a month, after an estimated $26,237 in federal tax, state tax, Social Security and Medicare. That is an effective tax rate of 26.2%. Filing jointly, itemizing or contributing to a 401(k) all change the figure.

How is overtime calculated in Delaware?

Follows the federal Fair Labor Standards Act: covered, non-exempt employees earn at least 1.5× their regular rate for hours worked beyond 40 in a workweek. There is no daily overtime requirement. Overtime pay is taxed as ordinary income — there is no separate overtime tax rate — but because a big overtime week raises your annualised pay, payroll systems often withhold more from that paycheck than your yearly rate implies. It evens out when you file.

How are bonuses taxed in Delaware?

Bonuses are supplemental wages. Most employers withhold a flat 22% for federal tax, plus Delaware tax at your regular withholding rate. Social Security and Medicare apply too. On a $10,000 bonus with a $100,000 salary, expect roughly $6,343 to land in your account. Withholding is not your final tax — if too much was withheld you get it back when you file.

How much should a 1099 worker save for taxes in Delaware?

On $70,000 of net self-employment profit, a single filer in Delaware owes roughly $18,315 in combined self-employment and income tax — about 26.2% of profit. Setting aside 29.2% of every payment is a safer rule of thumb, because it leaves room for a good year pushing you into a higher bracket. Estimated payments are due quarterly.

What is the minimum wage in Delaware?

Delaware's minimum wage is $15.00 per hour as of January 1, 2025. Delaware completed a phased increase to $15.00 per hour on January 1, 2025.

Are there local income taxes in Delaware?

The City of Wilmington levies a 1.25% wage tax on income earned within the city, paid by residents and non-residents alike. It is not included in the estimate above.

Sources & methodology

Every rate on this page comes from a primary source: the IRS for federal figures and Delaware’s own revenue and labor agencies for state figures. State tax data last reviewed August 27, 2026 against 2025 tables.

View all sources

Federal income tax is estimated using the annual rate schedules and the standard deduction for your filing status. It assumes a Form W-4 filled out with no dependent credits, no other income and no extra deductions claimed in Steps 3 and 4.

Itemized deductions, the Child Tax Credit, education credits, the Earned Income Tax Credit, the qualified business income deduction and the Alternative Minimum Tax are not modeled.

Employer withholding and final tax liability are different numbers. What comes out of your paycheck is an advance payment; the return you file determines what you actually owe.
